About This Place

El Modelo Mexican Foods, nestled in the heart of Albuquerque’s historic Barelas neighborhood, is a revered destination for lovers of authentic New Mexican cuisine. Since 1929, this cherished establishment has been delighting locals and visitors alike with its vibrant, soulful flavors and time-honored recipes that pay homage to the rich culinary heritage of the region.

Step inside El Modelo and you’ll find a warm, no-frills atmosphere where the focus is firmly on the food—simple, honest, and profoundly satisfying. The menu is a treasure trove of classic New Mexican dishes, bursting with color and bold spices that paint an irresistible portrait of tradition and comfort.

At the very heart of El Modelo's reputation are the legendary tamales, crafted with care and bursting with depth. The Pork Tamale and Red Chile Tamales are standouts, each bite melding tender masa with rich, slow-cooked chile that carries a perfect balance of smoky heat and savory warmth. Customers like Tyler rave that even leftover tamales, refrigerated for days, maintain their robust flavors—an extraordinary testament to the kitchen’s dedication to quality.

If tamales are the soul, the plates are the heartbeat of the menu. The Chile Spare Rib Plate offers five succulent spare ribs smothered in piquant red chile, topped with fresh shredded cheese and crisp lettuce, paired with crunchy chips for texture contrast—a dish that encapsulates New Mexico's bold character. The Huevos Rancheros, with two eggs perched atop corn tortillas and smothered in green chile and meat, offer a hearty start that’s as vibrant as it is comforting.

For burrito enthusiasts, El Modelo presents a variety of special creations such as the Carnitas or Chicharrones Burrito and the iconic Chile Relleno Burrito, combining stuffed green chiles with refried beans and cheese, all wrapped in a warm tortilla. These fillings exude a soul-warming, melt-in-your-mouth texture that effortlessly blends spice and creaminess in every bite.

Beyond tamales and burritos, the menu dazzles with inventive items like Chile Cheese Fries and the lesser-known but equally delightful Green Bean Taco—a nod to traditional ingredients presented with a fresh twist. And don’t overlook the Stuffed Sopapillas Tamales Chile Relleno, a creative fusion that perfectly captures El Modelo’s commitment to celebrating New Mexico’s culinary roots while inviting exploration.

Customer reviews echo the restaurant’s authenticity and quality. Clifford Clarke praises the handmade sopapillas—an airy, golden delight that elevates any meal—while also noting the restaurant's consistent, friendly service. Tim Askelson’s words poignantly capture the essence of El Modelo: it’s "the pilgrimage you need to make" for genuine New Mexican soul food, calling it a true institution in the city. Even those seeking milder heat, like TeamFurjan, find something to enjoy, highlighting the menu’s versatility alongside its generous portions.

To dine at El Modelo is to savor a tangible piece of Albuquerque’s culinary legacy—a place where rich red chiles swirl in perfect harmony with fresh ingredients, and every dish tells a story steeped in generations of tradition. Whether you stop by for the iconic tamales or settle in for a hearty plate of enchiladas smothered in red chile, the experience is bound to linger on your palate and in your heart.

If you find yourself in Albuquerque, missing out on El Modelo would not only be a shame, it would be a true culinary oversight. Prepare to be warmly welcomed, utterly satisfied, and irresistibly drawn back for more of what many describe simply as “the best of everything.”

The food was good, and the handmade sopapilla was especially delicious. Customer service was solid as well. My only critique is the excessive packaging—there was a lot of paper used to wrap the food, which felt wasteful and actually made the presentation look less appealing than the food deserved. From a sustainability standpoint, simplifying the packaging would go a long way and better reflect the quality of the meal.

The Real Deal: Authentic New Mexican Soul Food. If you want the absolute best, no-nonsense New Mexican food in Albuquerque—and arguably the state—El Modelo is the pilgrimage you need to make. Established in 1929, this spot in the historic Barelas neighborhood isn't just a restaurant; it’s an institution. The Food: Legendary Tamales Let’s start with what put them on the map: the tamales. They aren't just good; they are world-class. These aren't the skimpy tamales you get elsewhere; they are massive, moist, and packed with flavor. The red chile pork tamales are a spiritual experience. Come hungry. Seriously. The portions here are affectionately known as "industrial strength. I had the green chile beef burrito and a special burrito with red chile, bacon and chicharrones that provide the perfect crunch. El Modelo is old-school cool. It’s primarily a takeout operation with some outdoor picnic tables, so don't expect indoor dining service. You grab your ticket, wait for your number (and there will be a wait, because it's that good), and eat your feast under the New Mexico sky or in your car because you can't wait to dig in. It feels gritty, authentic, and utterly unpretentious. El Modelo is a bucket-list destination for anyone who claims to love New Mexican cuisine. It has survived nearly a century for a reason: they don't cut corners. It is greasy, spicy, filling, and absolutely perfect.

Red chile tamales are amazing. I could only eat half of the #3 fresh. My partner and I ate the rest as 6 day old, refrigerated leftovers and the flavors and food was still amazing. That’s an amazing feat for a restaurant to brag about. I’d definitely go back again when visiting New Mexico.

The I got a green chile chicken burrito. It was good. I liked it. Chile wasn't hot. For 8 bucks, it was fairly small than I would've liked. I'm open to giving this place another shot. They got a big menu. But yeah. Overall, it was good.

It's iconic for a reason, when one drives through Albuquerque it's a crime not to visit this restaurant. It's just the best of everything.

It's an Albuquerque icon, my husband LOVES it and grew up eating there. He would give it a 5+, I would not. I want to respect the icon and acknowledge that it holds a special place. My thoughts... It's crazy busy. Cashiers are stressed and it shows. They are rude and just want to move people along. Not kind, not helpful. Food is okay. Stuffed sopapilla is delicious, tostada is really good. Tamales are meh. It's a preference, I get it. I like my tamales with lots of flavor and chile, I like my pork shredded.... These aren't it. The pork is in chunks, the chile is sparse and the flavor is bland. I have two in my fridge right now. They've been there for 3 days.... With 3 teens in the house. That speaks for itself, in my opinion. The masa is good though. The waiting area is always busy, standing room only. Not a problem just be prepared if you've never been.

The Mexican food at El Modelo' s was very delicious and authentic. The food was packed with care and a smile. The place is not for sit-down eating. After ordering and paying, you are given a number. When your food is ready, your number is called. After proceeding to the counter, you receive your food, and it is that simple. There are a few benches outside to sit and eat, but not my recommendation. In my opinion it is not at all a sit-down restaurant or cafe.
